Southampton fans with must read comments on Newcastle United, Steve Bruce and ASM

Southampton fans had seen their team win only once on the last 17 visits to St James Park.

Whilst the Saints turned up with a recent record of losing all their last six Premier League away games, conceding 18 goals.

With 11 defeats in their last 12 PL away matches and even worse look, as the one win was a victory at all but already relegated Sheffield United in March (2021).

Surely the perfect occasion for Steve Bruce to send his players out for a dominant attack-minded front foot performance to overwhelm and easily beat these relegation rivals…

Talk about not following the (media’s and neutrals’) expected script!

Southampton fans reacting to the 90 minutes (plus added time) they watched on Saturday, with comments (see below) that perfectly reflect what all honest Newcastle United fans also accepted was the reality that took place at St James Park.

Interesting especially to see how Southampton fans see the rest of the season panning out for Newcastle United and their views on Steve Bruce and Allan Saint-Maximin in particular.

Southampton fans commenting via their Saints Web message board:

‘Ralph had Bruce’s number all game, he tactically outdone him.

We were just let down by our finishing in the main, simple as that.

But tactically Bruce was nowhere near.’

‘If ASM is injured for any period of time then they are relegated.’

‘I’m certainly more optimistic for our season than Newcastle’s.

They look like they’re reliant on teams like us throwing points at them, rather than ever actually outplaying someone.’

‘I’d be amazed if Newcastle manage to stay up this season from what I’ve seen of them so far.’

‘Newcastle are the baffling most lucky team in the league, they have played like relegation contenders for about 3 years, park the bus even at home and seem to somehow fluke results from a handful of shots at best.’

‘Saint-Maximin and Wilson will ensure they do enough at the other end to keep their heads above. They’re the sort of players who can nick you a goal when you’re not even in the game, as we saw today. Priceless players.’

‘Djenepo just cracks me up, such a funny player. That miss really was hilarious.

Newcastle are pretty cr.p, they really only have one player who just happens to be very good.’

‘I do wonder why players like Allan Saint Maximin, Adama Traore and other rapid players like that look amazing against us, yet over the season their underlying stats against other teams are largely average.

Or maybe they are just 1 in 5 games type players and it always seems to be against us.’

‘I’m amazed one of the so called bigger clubs hasn’t offered a big wad of cash for Saint Maximin.

Arsenal have blown close to 100M on bang average CB and Gk for instance.’

‘Bambi on ice should have had 2 in the first half and the game was over.

Newcastle are poorer than us thats for sure, and we just seem to lose concentration at the wrong times putting ourselves under pressure.’

‘We paid the price for not being clinical when we were so on top we were embarrassing them.’

‘Basically, Newcastle had a good day where they got a bit luckier than expected with the chances they created going in, and we had a day where we were a bit unlucky with the chances we created going in.’

‘66% possession and 11 shots without scoring in the first half was more down to the panic Toon defending than simply blaming Djenepo for missing when so close in, and on another day we might easily have gone in 2 or 3 goals up.

Huge disappointment conceding second goal after 91 mins.

Although not scoring, Adam Armstrong contributed to the result through sheer determination and it was left to “Super-Prowsey” to do the business and get us a well-earned point. ‘

‘Breaking down teams like that is just generally hard whoever you are and Newcastle have been like that for a while, I mean you can see why despite results being ok the Geordies are so unhappy, if we played like that at home to another lower half team I would be livid and they do it all the time. We have generally been better away than at home and probably more effective against teams that try to play rather than teams like Burnley, but yesterday Newcastle basically played like the away team.’

‘Armstrong wasn’t at his best today but that’s a goal in his first game, an assist last week (i’ll give it to him despite the dubious goals panel decision) and winning a penalty today. Also played a great through ball for Djenepo’s second great chance. He’s making a good start!’

‘I think Armstrong really wanted to prove a point at his old club for releasing them and probably tried too hard. But honestly its tough for any striker when a team basically plays a back 5, but he won the pen with good movement and his pace.’

‘A bright and compelling performance ultimately compromised by lack of match fitness. By 60 minutes we were done with KWP and Livramento largely spectators as our over-lapping wing runs that we depend upon so much disappeared. Inevitably our performance collapsed. Hopefully our match fitness and stamina will improve as game time increase.’

‘Not Redmond’s biggest fan by any means but credit to him i thought he did really well yesterday. Not sure what else you want him to do, it was a great ball in for the first having beaten his man, and the second goal was a perfectly weighted through ball which Armstrong would’ve buried had lascelles not chopped him down.’

‘I don’t think Djanepo’s 2 chances were “sitters”. The first one the ball was played slightly behind him at pace by Liv and he couldn’t adjust his feet, sometimes those bobble in but not then. 2nd chance he had 2 shots that were blocked by last ditch (heroic?) defending. Yes he might have done better but overall not a disastrous performance by any means. I thought Armstrong was perhaps as wasteful with too many speculative shots, not that you can fault the intent but needs to be a little more selective.

‘Should have easily won that game, nearly lost (somehow) but snatched a draw that felt like a win.

Football is very strange.’

‘Saint-Maximin is Adama Troare Mk 2, looks very good and dangerous, often little end product. He just seems to do well against us.

3 goals and 4 assists last year and exactly the same the year before. Redmond has 6 goals and 7 assists in the same period…’

‘We were the better team and Newcastle were clearly lucky.’

‘Newcastle would be nothing without St Maximin, he is such a dangerous player. Quite surprised no bigger clubs have made a move for him.

Would have been a travesty if we didn’t get at least a point from that but it’s the same old defensive frailties costing us along with not taking chances at the other end.’

‘Newcastle are not very good.

Should have been put to bed before half time.’

‘Reckon the TV cameraman was a disgruntled Geordie, a thousand Saints fans celebrating Prowsey’s pen and all they manage to get is a bunch of grey seats and a sprinkling of the fans.

Travesty had we lost that.’

‘There was no way in a month of Sundays we deserved to lose that today, we did everything right in that first half in particular. Pressed, attacked, broke, got in behind. It was spot on tactically and Bruce was totally bamboozled.’

‘Lighten up ffs. We (all of the team and subs) played well but ASM is a top player and so difficult to defend against.’

‘By far the better team, double their shots, way more possession, actually tried to win rather than camping at the back at home. They won’t be that flukey against other teams.’
