Re:Claim Street Festival, Southampton, 25th September 2021

On Saturday 25th September, Outreach Radio were broadcasting live from 11am to 4pm from the Re:Claim Street Festival in Southampton.

Re:Claim Street Festival was a brand new experience, taking over the city centre with music, sports, art, gaming and performance. While there was lots for teens and young adults, it’s was also a chance for people of all ages to step out of their comfort zones and discover something new, uncover more of what Southampton has to offer, and enjoy the thrills and vibrancy of street culture.

Re:Claim Street Festival

This fresh new annual event aims to become a flagship event for the city, reconnecting Southampton’s communities with the city centre as we emerge from a global pandemic and look to the future. Re:Claim invited visitors and residents back into the city centre to Re:Claim the streets for themselves. It’s setting its sights on becoming a flagship event for the city as we bid for UK City Of Culture 2025 status.

Outreach Radio teamed up with the Kings & Queens Coaching Academy, a local organisation run by two highly qualified enthusiastic coaches wanting to share their love of the game.

Kings & Queens Coaching Academy offers football coaching including 1 to 1, tactical/technical group work, wildcat centres, football events, community football in Southampton & London, including online sessions and events.

Jane Yeates, Business Partner and Head Coach for Kings & Queens Coaching Academy has 18 years of playing experience including Centre of Excellence and Women’s football, 4 years of coaching experience, and is a FA Level 2 qualified coach working toward UEFA B. She commented, “Reclaim was a great festival to be involved which showcased some amazing talent from freestyle & panna football to linking with Outreach Radio, DJ Tinkerbass and Francesca, an amazing live performer. It was also great to see so many kids jump in the cage and play football or watching the talent. King’s & Queens Coaching Academy hope to be putting on more football/music events for the city & encourage more children to play football… especially girls. K&Q are very much involved with communities in Southampton and run girls only football sessions for 5-11yr olds at St Mary’s Leisure centre Mondays 5:30pm-6:30pm & Tuesday 4.30pm-5:30pm, with the hope to create football teams in the city… which there isn’t yet”.

DJ TinkerbassWith Jane and the team demonstrating some awesome football skills, and meeting parents and children interested in finding out more about football coaching sessions, Outreach Radio’s “Club Lockdown” DJ’s and guests kept the crowd entertained and dancing with some superb music and live mixing.  (Club Lockdown is the name for Outreach Radio’s dance music brand that broadcasts on Friday & Saturday nights).

Matt BelseyMatt Belsey, Head of Club Lockdown at Outreach Radio commented, “What an amazing opportunity to bring the community together. It was an absolute pleasure supporting the Kings & Queens Training Academy who were featuring some amazingly impressive demonstrations whilst we spun the tunes. After the last year and a half we’ve all experienced, it was fantastic to see everyone coming together for the Re:Claim Street Festival. As the Head of Club Lockdown for the station which offers the best variety of electronic dance music, I can safely say that it was a sigh of relief when when venues and events were given the all clear, as many of our DJ’s earn their money in the clubs”.

DJ TwistHe went on to say, “It was great to see our DJs out playing live and face-to-face with our listeners for the first time, confirming to the world that the party is far from over. This was also the first time they have been able to play together other than in a studio since the pandemic started, and we hope it was one of many more to come. Until the next time, let us bring the party to your doorstep on Fridays and Saturday nights.”.

DJ’s from Outreach Radio were Matt Belsey (Tech House), Mr Twist (Old & New Skool Garage) and DJ Oz (Reggae), and they were joined by guests DJ Tinkerbass (“Dirty” Drum & Bass) and Sam Click (House), with a superb live performance from Francesca.

DJ Oz & The Groovy PelicanOsman Sen-Chadun, Managing Director for Outreach Radio commented, “What a fantastic day we had, on so many levels. As a volunteer-based local radio station run by the community, it was an absolute pleasure being able to support Jane and the Kings & Queens Coaching Academy with all the great work they do with local kids, to also support the Re:Claim Street Festival and all the efforts going into the bid for Southampton to become the UK City Of Culture 2025, and to showcase on daytime radio some of the amazing dance music DJ’s from Outreach Radio.”
